Is a celebrant ceremony legally binding?

It depends on where you marry — and we'll tell you plainly for your location. In Scotland, celebrant marriages are fully legal. In Australia and New Zealand, independent celebrants are government-authorised and sign your license on the spot. In England & Wales and most US states, a celebrant ceremony is personal rather than legal, so couples pair it with a short civil registration (about £60 plus certificate in England & Wales, or a county license of $30–$100 in the US). Your celebrant coordinates the entire legal track so nothing is missed.

What's the difference between a celebrant and an officiant?

In everyday use, "officiant" is the umbrella term — anyone legally allowed to solemnise a marriage, including judges, clergy and online-ordained friends. "Celebrant" signals a trained ceremony professional whose career is writing and delivering meaningful ceremonies. All celebrants can officiate (where law permits); not all officiants are celebrants. If you want a five-minute legal formality, an officiant suffices. If you want the ceremony to be the centrepiece of your day, you want a celebrant.

How much should I expect to pay?

Honest ranges, by market: UK celebrants typically £450–£1,300, with most couples spending £600–£900 and premium bespoke celebrants £1,000–£3,000+. US officiants average $260 nationally, with professional secular celebrants $200–$1,000+. Destination celebrants charge more for travel and multi-day work. The officiant remains under 1% of the average US wedding budget of roughly $34,000 — the smallest line with the largest emotional yield. See our data page for sources.

How far in advance should we book?

For peak-season Saturdays (May–October in the northern hemisphere), 12–18 months is safest — the most sought-after celebrants book out a year ahead. For off-season or weekday ceremonies, 6–9 months is comfortable. That said, we've matched couples with celebrants in under three weeks for elopements; if your date is close, say so and we'll move quickly.

Can we write our own vows?

Yes — and most of our couples do, with editorial help. Your celebrant will workshop drafts with you, keep each partner's vows in balance (similar length and tone), and preserve surprises for the day if you want them. If writing isn't your thing, your celebrant will interview you and write vows that sound unmistakably like you, for your approval.

Can we include religious elements in a secular ceremony?

Yes. A humanist ceremony avoids acts of worship but can absolutely include a reading, blessing or piece of music with religious meaning, framed as literature or heritage. For couples who want genuine prayer or scripture woven through, our interfaith celebrants design that from the ground up. Nothing is off-limits except content that targets or excludes your guests.

What if our celebrant falls ill on the day?

Every roster celebrant carries public liability insurance and maintains a named professional backup — a vetted celebrant of equivalent standard who receives your script in advance. In hundreds of weddings across the roster, the backup has been needed only a handful of times. It has never once failed.

Do you handle the marriage licence and paperwork?

Your celebrant guides the legal track end to end: when to apply, which office, what ID and notice periods apply, who signs as witnesses, and the return deadline after the ceremony — the step inexperienced officiants most often miss. Where celebrants can't legally sign (England & Wales, most US states), they coordinate the separate registration so it slots cleanly before or after your ceremony.

We're planning a destination wedding. How does it work?

You'll typically have a legal or symbolic split: a quick local legal registration at home, and your full written ceremony at the destination. Your celebrant travels, liaises with your planner and venue across time zones, schedules a rehearsal or walkthrough, and delivers the ceremony in your language — several of our celebrants work bilingually. Destination fees usually exclude flights and accommodation, quoted at cost.

How does matching work?

Send your inquiry and we reply within one working day with up to three roster suggestions, each with availability, fee and a short note on why they fit your brief. You speak with your favourite (video call, no charge), and only then commit. Matching is free; you pay the celebrant's fee directly, with no platform markup.

What is your cancellation policy?

Each celebrant's agreement specifies their own terms — typically a non-refundable booking deposit (10–25%) with the balance due nearer the date, and a sliding refund for postponements. We require every agreement to state, in writing, what happens on illness, travel disruption and cancellation, on both sides. No verbal promises; it's all in the contract.

I'm a celebrant. How do I join the roster?

We open applications twice a year and accept roughly one in forty. Requirements: 300+ weddings performed, formal celebrancy training, current insurance, and three anonymised scripts that survive a blind read by our panel. Send a short introduction and your portfolio link to hello@weddingcelebrants.com with "Roster application" in the subject line.
