The wedding, by the numbers.

Most wedding advice is folklore. This page isn't. Every figure below is drawn from named, dated industry research — so you can plan, budget and negotiate with real data instead of someone's cousin's opinion.

US officiant spend by wedding type

A hometown ceremony averages $240; fly your celebrant across an ocean and the average becomes $460 — nearly double.

That gap isn't travel fees. It's couples signalling that when the setting is once-in-a-lifetime, the words have to be too. The officiant remains the smallest line in a ~$34,000 budget — under one percent — and simultaneously the only vendor every single guest watches at work.

Professional secular celebrants typically charge $200–$1,000+ depending on customisation; a fully bespoke, interview-driven script sits at the top of that range.

In the UK, celebrant-led ceremonies have overtaken church weddings — more than half of couples now pair a celebrant ceremony with a separate civil registration.

Most spend £600–£900 on a personalised ceremony; premium celebrants with years of bespoke work command £1,000–£3,000+. For comparison, a registrar attending your venue starts around £300 and delivers a script written by statute, not by you.

Humanists UK accredited celebrants (≈350 across England & Wales as of May 2026) typically charge £700–£1,500.

Budgets aren't shrinking with the guest lists — they're being concentrated. Fewer people, more per person, and a ceremony written for the room you actually invited.

Chart 03 — The destination boom

Nearly a third of weddings now involve a passport.

A note on our sourcing standards

Published estimates for the destination-wedding segment vary widely — from $16.2bn (Fact.MR, 2026) to $45bn (Persistence Market Research, 2026) — because analysts draw the boundaries differently: some count only packaged venue services, others include travel and accommodation.

Where sources conflict, we show the spread rather than pretending certainty.

Single-country survey data (The Knot, Bridebook, Hitched) is more precise than global forecasts, and is what we use for fee guidance.
